District Profile
Mt Darwin district is the second largest district in the province in terms of population size. The total population size of the district is 240,727 which is 23.1% of the total population of Mashonaland central. About 93.7% live in rural areas while 6.3% live in urban Centre (National Population Census, 2022).
The district is wholly under the auspices of Pfura Rural District Council, which is one of the eight rural district councils in Mashonaland Central Province. It is made up of communal areas, resettlements, small scale and commercial farms in terms of settlement pattern.
Geographical Information
The district covers an area of 2860km². The district is divided into two types, which are classified as the valley floor with fairly flat terrain and upper Mt Darwin, which is undulating. Almost 80% of the district lies within agro-ecological regions/ zones 4 and 5 which are characterized by low rainfall (600-800mm) poor soils and high temperatures (Pfura RDC Strategic Plan, 2021-25). 20% of the district also lies within agro-ecological regions 2 and 3 usually in upper Mt Darwin.
It is situated to the North of the province, sharing a common border with Mozambique along the Mukumbura River on the North, with Rushinga District on the North- East, with Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe on the east, with Shamva District on the South and Centenary District on the West.
